GLADSTONE'S LAST SON
Lord Gladstone of Hawarden, Hawarden Castle, North Wales, who was the only surviving son of the late 'Mr 4 W. E. Gladstone, left £473,274 3s 7d. on which estate duty of £143,255 6s lOd has been p.aid. He died last April, aged 83, says the "Daily Telegraph."
He left .£50,000 free of duty to his wife absolutely and £50.000 on trust for her for life, with remainder, in accordance with a memorandum or as she may appoint; £ 1000 each to his great nephews Glynne William Gladstone Wickham and Neville Edward Alexander Wickham. £1000 to Catherine Wickham, leasehold premises 78, Eaton Square to his wife for life, and certain real estate to her absolutely. In addition to a number of family bequests Lord Gladstone left:— £2000 each to University'l College, Bangor, Bursary Fund, and the Liberal Agents' Benefit Fund. £5000 to Chester Royal Infirmary. £2000 each to King George's Fund for Sailors' Hawarden Parish Council for the relief of poverty or other charitable user-, and University College, Bangor.Musical Department.: He directed his trustees. If they shall think fit, after consulting his friends. Sir Charles ■ Mallett, Francis W. Hirst, and Arthur Tilney Bassett, to pay to the Parliamentary Liberal Party, a sum not exceeding £5000. He also left £2500 to the National Liberal Club, of which he was president; £ 1000 (after consulting his three friends) to the Proportional Representation Society; £1000 each to the R.S.P.C.A.. the N.S.P.C.C., and the Children's Country Holidays Fund.
Councillor G. London has been appointed the Petone Borough Council's representative on the Wellington Beautifying Society's executive.
