The general, forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for south.-westerly winds to the north of Kawhia and East Cape. Elsewhere winds will be westerly in direction at first but will back again to the south-west in most part. They will be moderate to strong generally, gale force being reached in places south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint The weather will be mainly fair in eastern areas, but in districts with a westerly aspect and in the far south it will be changeable with scattered showers'. Cool temperatures may be expected.
While an anticyclone continues to extend across the Tasman Sea on to the North Island, since last night "a depression has been moving across the South Island. - The latter has caused winds to change to fresh westerlies or north-westerlies about and to : the south of Cook Strait, but from Taranaki northward south-westerlies were still prevailing this morning. Fine weather has been experienced in most parts of the country, but since last night showers have fallen on the West Coast in both islands and about Foveaux Strait. In the latter area very squally and high westerly winds have prevailed.
■ Auckland has had a continuance of fresh south-westerly winds with changeable weather. Yesterday niorning was fine, but since the afternoon there have.-. been some occasional showers.
Wellington had a fine and sunny day with nine hours of bright sunshine. Winds in the morning were light and variable and in the afternoon southerly. It was calm between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., after which a northerly freshened somewhat. Three degrees of frost were recorded at Kelburn.
Christchurch had fine and bright weather with a light northerly in the morning and a light southerly in the afternoon. There was a frost of eight degrees last night, and the weather this morning was calm and cloudy.
Dunedin also had a fine day. A strong westerly wind blew in the morning, changing to a south-westerly during the afternoon. By this morning the wind had backed to the west again. ' "' ,
