FORESTRY'S GOOD FORM
, Forestry, who prior to his defeat by two half-heads into third place in the , Rosebery Handicap on Saturday had ' just gained a sequence of three sue- ! cesses, including the nine furlongs , Campsie Handicap.at Canterbury Park ; in course record time, had previously , also registered such a sequence in the Dominion, and at that time a little over . eighteen months ago he had looked : like developing into a very success- ■ ful handicapper. His latest form reveals that he might have fulfilled that promise too had he not broken down ■ shortly after his transfer to Sydney. Even now he is a horse who is very ■ unsound and it is not expected that he will stand up to much racing. 1 Forestry, who is now just turned seven years, was raced in the Dominiion by his breeder, the late Mr. V. Riddiford. Shortly before Mr. Riddiford was leaving on his last trip to Eng- ■ land he decided to dispose of his team i W training, and at the sale, held in : conjunction with the National Sales in >. Januax-y, twelve-months ago, Forestry who had within the month previous ,'wpn the Manawatu Grandstand and • Himatangi Handicaps, both nine fur- , longs, and. the Wairarapa Cup, 1-i miles, > brought top price of 600 guineas. His ; purchaser was the Sydney trainer J. 1 r. Jamieson, who, as his subsequent racing showed, was acting for one of ' his patrons, Mr. F. W.: Thatcher. For [ ms new owner he won only one race, . the Rosehill Handicap, at the expense ! of Le • Legion three, months after his ■ arrival in Sydney, after which he broke . down rather badly. ; Following a spell of nearly twelve i months Forestry was taken over "by' • the Mqorefleld trainer J. Cush, and i he resumed racing Sin the Ashburv • Handicap at Canterbury Park- on July : 13, when.he made a good showing till i he weakened in the last two furlongs.: i It was not long afterwards that a win came, and then two more followed prior to his defeat under 9.5 on Saturday In the Canterbury Park Campsie Handicap his time for the nine furlongs, lmin 53£ sec, bettered the previous best, recorded by The Brewer earlier on the same day, by a quarter of a second.
