BASKETBALL REFEREES
ANNUAL MEETING:
fi.Z. ASSOCIATION
Delegates representative of branch associations all over New Zealand attended the first annual meeting of the New Zealand Basketball Referees' Association, .which was held yesterday at the Wellington Education Board's rooms. Mr. S. G. MacFarlane presided. ' The annual- report stated .that since the inaugural meeting last April, the management committee had' been engaged on three main tasks—conducting theoretical and practical examinations, formulating a constitution for the association, and completing the initial organisation of the association. The association at present comprised eight-affiliated branches, namely, Auckland, North Auckland, Taranaki, Poverty Bay, Canterbury, South , Canterbury, Ashburton, and Southland. Foundation members also included Wellington, Marlborough, Hawke's Bay, and Otago. ,The examination , standard lor referees was- discussed by delegates, following a suggestion' that 85 per cent., as at present, was too ■ high a percentage to demand of candidates for a'pass. Of 65 papers examined for theory only 19 had qualified, and only 9 out of 21 candidates for the practical test. , ■ s Mrs. H. D. Muir moved that 85 per cent, be considered a first-class pass, and that a second-class pass be allowed for 75 per cent Mr. R. -J. Thompson said he thought that the present percentage was too high. It would be better to make 75 out of 100 ■ the pass marks, and insist on. referees obtaining at least 85 per cent, to be eligible for New Zealand tournaments. It was decided that 75 perJ cent, should be sufficient for a pass, but that 85 per cent, should -be an honours pass, entitling the candidate to sit a practical examination, and so qualify as a referee at New Zealand tournaments.
The proposed constitution formulated by the management committee was placed'before the meeting and approved with certain amendments.
