DOMINION TOURNAMENT.

MANY PLAYERS COMPETING

Nearly 300 basketball players.from' all over New Zealand will'be competing in the ninth Dominion tournament of the New Zealand Basketball-^Asso-ciation, which will be officially opened tomorrow afternoon by her Excellency Lady Galway. Including the-23-teams, it is expected that between 300 and 400 visitors will attend the tournament. The official opening ceremony- will take place at 2.30 p.m. at. the. Mount Cook School courts in--Buckle Street. There will be a parade and march past of teams, including first and- second grade trophy holders, -The "opening matches will be played in the morning, commencing at 9 o'clock, and play will continue all day on Thursday,. Friday, and Saturday, culminating in the final match for the: President's: trophy,. and the North Island versus. South: Island game on Saturday afternoon..;. . \ \

In the event of wet. weather/play will be transferred to the Show Buildings, and possibly also to the Drill Hall. The executive of the ■Wellington Basketball Association has arranged an official dinner on Saturday evening, when the trophies will be-presented. Meetings of the New Zealand Council of the association wilUbe "■ heid-r'each evening during the tournament ' :'"•{ Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, Wellington, Otago, Southland, Waikato, and Poverty Bay have entered teams in the first grade. The teams in the first section of the second grade-are Marlborough, Manawatu,, Wairoa, Ashburton, Bush, North Auckland, Southland Minor, and in the second Section Wairarapa, West Coast, Nelsori; South Canterbury, Wanganui, Rdtoriia-B'ay of Plenty, Taranaki, and Wellington Minor. >At present Wellington hold the New Zealand cup,, Canterbury the Annie Brown cup, Poverty" Bay the President's shield, and Marlborough, the Hayhurst cup in the second grade. The following referees have been appointed to act at the tournament;— Mesdames McKenzie (Auckland), D. Cleland (Hutt Valley), Misses E. Cahill (Napier), O. Wharton (Wellington), L. Sturrock (Wellington), G. Basstian (Southland), S. Foster! (Otago), Messrs. Howe (Wellington), R. 3. Thompson (Ashburton); F. Mal.colmson (South Canterbury), F-Xovatt (Canterbury), A. Kinross (Southland), S. G. Macfarlane (Astiburtpri).- Miss Gordon (Waikato) has been'appointed South Island-selector, while.Mrs. J. C.
