SPORTING MATCH

TWO-YEAR-OLD CONTEST

(From "Tho Post's" Representative.)

LONDON,'JuIy 20. Everyone at the Newmarket Meeting on July 16 was interested in an unusual' race, a private contest between,two- horses that 'were born on the same day ai the same stud, in adjacent -boxes, and are;|now the property \o£;two, different owners.'-,* Mr. Z." G. Michalinos's Zclmos and Mrs. W. Raphael's Picasso, now two years old, were foaled at Lord Derby's Hillside Stud, near Newmarket. When their present owners heard, of this, about a week afterwards, they immediately decided to'match them during their first season: Mrs. Raphael set up something of a record by engaging the champion jockey, Gordon Richards, to ride Picasso for a race to be run two years ahead. But Zelmos, the favourite, was ridden by T. Weston. and he justified his favouritism by winning' comfortably the fivefurlong "event by a length and a half. It was a good race, and for a while those who had laid long odds on Zelmos had cause to doubt the wisdom of their choice. Picasso held a slight lead for nearly half a^ mile. Richards was the first to draw his whip, but a furlong from home Weston was riding Zelmos equally hard, without, lot - a while, gaining any advantage. On the hill to the winning post Picasso shortened his stride and Zelmos took his' measure.
