PRICE OF GOLD

(By Telegraph— Press Asen.—Copyright.)

WELSH TINPLATE TRADE. .Increased demand for Welsh tinplates in the United Kingdom market is encouraging the industry, which has recently received a set-back, owing to decreased export trade and the growth of tinplate manufacture abroad. Only a few years ago less than a quarter of the total Welsh production was retained in Great Britain, but the proportion is now nearly one-half. This is mainly due to new outlets in the British motor industry and a stillrising demand for Welsh tinplate for canning purposes.

It is anticipated that, this year, under the stimulus of the British Milk Marketing Board, some 34,000,000 gallons of milk will be condensed and canned for home use and nearly 6,000,000 gallons for export. Impetus will be given to the use of tinplate for canning by the Imperial Fruit and Canning Exhibition, to be held. at Cardiff from October 25 to November 2 next. The latest machinery for turning Welsh tinplates into cans and household uten--sils will be demonstrated, and it is confidently anticipated that new records in home consumption will be established as a result of the exhibition.
