Burgess), 11.5 . 3 All started. Despite determined challenges, the topweight, Valpeen, won the Grand National Steeples. Going to the first fence the leader was Free Air, followed by Billy Boy and Valpeen, with Punchestown tailing the field. At the doubles in front of the stand, Dunmure took the lead, and he led out of the straight from Peterette, with Billy Boy right outside in the middle of the track. The field was fairly well bunched and at the next fence Umtali fell. At the Kennels' double Dunmure led from Valpeen and Peteretje. Punchestown was still in the rear.just behind Ruby Meteor, who was not jumping as well as usual. Valpeen commenced to make his run and took the lead, from D 7 unmure, who was followed by Peterette and Punchestown, the last-named having improved hisposition rapidly. Dunmure fell shortly after- and Billy Boy rapidly improved his position until he' was running- in behind Valpeen. At the second fence from home Punchestown went over with Billy Boy and for a brief spell took the lead. Valpeen lost very little ground, however, and, with Billy Boy, jumped the last fence beautifully to go on and win by two lengths, with Punchestown getting third money six lengths away. ■ - Time, 7min 4sec. ■ PREVIOUS WINNERS.
