GIVEN NEW SIGHT

By grafting new corneas on both eyes, sight has been restored to Miss Daphne Muir,' English novelist, who became blind when both corneas were injured in an accident. (The cornea, is not the eye lens, but a transparent tissue in front of the lens)..' Numerous cases have been reported of a successful graft of a cornea on to one eye, but there .are said to be no other cases of a double cornea transplant. The grafted corneas were:taken from eyes which had been removed from patients suffering from other-conditions, and, instead of being stitched to underlying tissues, they were held in place by strands of surgical silk-applied something like a cross-stitch in embroidery, pressure holding the new tissues in place until they grew fast. Miss Muir's vision is not perfect, but she can read newspaper head-lines and her own correspondence.
