(Received August 13, 12.30 p.m.)

LONDON, August 12.

Bright batting was a feature of both the South Africans' and Gloucestershire's innings when the cricket match between the two sides was continued at Cheltenham today. Also, the progress of the play has been exceedingly interesting, with little difference in the scores. ■In reply to the county's first-in-nings score of 279 South Africa put on 144 for the loss'of four wickets yesterday, the not-out men being Viljoen (64) and Cameron (21). Cameron added only 18 runs this morning but Viljoen defied the attack until he had taken his score to 122. He batted 190 minutes and hit fifteen 4's. Dalton, who made 48, became the sixth South African to complete an aggregate of 1000- runs on the tour. Sinfield followed up his performance "of making a century on the first day by taking three wickets at a cost of 41 runs, Hammond (three for 47) being the next most successful bowler. COUNTY SCORES QUICKLY. Gloucestershire wasted no time in going for the runs in their second innings. ' Barnett, one of the opening batsmen, made 46 of the first 54 runs scored in half an hour. In scoring a century Hammond gave a display that was reminiscent of his old-time form and caused bright hopes for his and England's chances in the fifth Test. He batted 132 minutes and hit sixteen 4's, For the South Africans Vincent did well with the ball, taking six wickets at a cost of 90 runs. •
