LORD DERBY'S TREBLE
FINAL DAY AT NEWMARKET
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, July 6,
A most remarkable scries of triumphs for the Earl of Derby characterised the Newmarket July Meeting on the last day. He had three winning horses — Bunker (Ellesmere Stakes), Tide-Way (Fulbourne Stakes), and Shining Tor (Waterbeach Handicap). Bunker and Tide-Way were by the young sire Fairway, another of whose progeny, Daytona, had won the important July Stakes on a' previous day. In addition to this, Fairway's own brother Pharos, who is now standing in France, is the sire of Shining Tor, so that the Phalaris stock received a tremendous advertisement through his two sons in a.very short period.
Shining Tor had run well at Ascot and was very much fancied. All the three winners on the last day—Bunker, Tide-Way, and Shining Tor —were favoured by the public, and Lord Derby's pleasure at seeing their success was accordingly all the greater. The owner, trainer (Colledge Leader), and jockey (R, Perryman) were heartily congratulated, and his Majesty added his felicitations to the owner in the paddock after Tide-Way had scored.
Bunker's race was won easily, but Shining Tor (4 years) had considerably more to do. He had 9.9 to carry, and it is to his great credit that he breasted the hill in such splendid fashion. Flying Spear looked like winning for a long way, but was done in the dip and only Pegasus and Greenore stayed on to chase the winner home. Shining Tor was smart up to a mile .in France "last year';
Tide-Way won her race fairly and squarely, and the runner-up to her was yet another of Fairway's progeny, the colt Pay Up, who ran prominently and well in Lord Astor's colours. TideWay was favourite.
