OBITUARY
SIR JOHN MACFARLAND (Received July 23, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Obituary.—Sir John MacFarland, Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. Sir John was well known in NewZealand, where every year he spent a month trout fishing. The late Sir John MacFarland served Melbourne University in its highest posts with remarkable ability as an administrator. He was'educated at the Royal Academical Institution,' McClinton's Academy, Belfast, Queen's College, Belfast, where '■ he was a gold medallist, and St. John's College, Cambridge. He was wrangler in the mathematical tropis in 1876, received the honorary degree LL.Di of the Royal University, Ireland, in 1892, assistant master at Repton, 1876-81, Master of Ormond College 18(11-1914, a member of the Melbourne University Council since 1886, a member of the Royal Commission on Technical Education in Victoria, 1899, and a. member of the Government Board lor the Protection of Aborigines, 1908. He was knighted in 1919, a year after he became Chancellor of the University.
