SITUATION IN LAHORE
EFFORTS TOWARDS PEACE WEEKEND INCIDENTS (British Official Wireless.) (Received July 23, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, July 22. The disturbance;; at' Lahore occasioned by the dispute between the Sikh and Mohammedan communities regarding the ownership of a temple were the subject of a question in the House of Commons today, in reply to which the Under-Secretary for India, Mr. R. A. Butler., stated that fresh trouble had broken out during the weekend. Large crowds of Moslems, assembling with the object of proceeding to Shohidganj Gurdwara, had assumed a violent attitude towards the police, and despite charges by police and mounted police refused to disperse. Firing became necessary on two occasions on Saturday after all other, efforts to disperse the crowds had failed and after a warning had been issued by Magistrates and again on. three occasions on Sunday. In all, 22; rounds were fired; and the number o:E killed is reported as not more than ten. Mr. Butler added that it was reported that the situation was under control, and responsible Moslems were doing their best to persuade their co-religion-ists to desist from defiance .of the law." Express messages from Lahore indicate that the peace efforts are continuing and that the Eiituation is well.in hand.
