RACING AT MARTON

RANGITIKEI HUNT'S DAY

VERY LITTLE REAL FORM

The North Island hunts circuit will be continued tomorrow with the Rangitikei Hunt Club's Annual Meeting at Marton, for which the fields, though generally of useful size, arc in many cases ol very little-known material. There is a minimum of form, but what there is will probably prevail. In the past the well-backed horses have generally succeeded at this meeting, which, with two purely gentlemen riders' events and another in which the amateurs will also be taking mounts, is the most "hunty" of the Dominion's season. Although there is fair promise of a fine day overhead, it is likely that the track will be heavy, for it is a course that holds moisture in the winter months. ■/,-. The .betting will be under the ordinary single-pool system. . HUNT CUP STEEPLES. The leading event is, of course, the Rangitikei Hunt Cup Steeples, the stake for which includes a trophy donated by Mr. K. McK. Duncan. Outside of Miss Pango, The Ranger, and The Drone there is little public form during the last few months; and the only one of these who has been racing well.is Miss Pango, though so far she has been contesting the gentlemen riders' flats in preference to tackling the country. The Ranger was disappointing last Saturday, but he has' impressed in his work as better than that. Waitaunaha, though rising fourteen years, has. previously won hunt cup events and took point-to-point honours at the Manawatu Hunt run' last Wednesday, so he may be one of the favourites, as he appears astonishingly well handicapped for a horse who has won several steeplechase events. Conference was useful on the flat and his pace would make him a good prospect if he'can jump the country. The gentlemen riders will be on top in the Riddiford Steeplechase and the Otairi Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, and on present knowledge these events must "be difficult to forecast. In the former race the form is practically an unknown quantity, but The Storm Wind, War Eagle, Glenleven, and lllawarra have had experience; and Glenleven was actually declared the winner of this race two years ago when the two who beat him home were disqualified for not jumping the last fence. In the Bracelet those who may be supported include Miss Pango, Cometra, Conference, Santoft, High Society, Even Money, and Benedictine, but a surprise is a possibility. HURDLERS AND HACKS. , The hurdlers will have their opportunity in the Rosebank Hack Hurdles, and main interest will attach to the reappearance in the role of Brigadore, w>ho had a race on the flat recently at Foxton and is engaged in the Grand National Hurdles. ; Brigadore preceded his good form at Riccarton last August by running a close second to Silent Bill in this race, and, with Lady Spy performing so moderately at Hastings on Saturday, his opposition tomorrow does not appear very strong. Karangapai, who ran second over the fences at Avondale in April, is a possible exception, and Headland and Kaola have fairly recently been in the money at the game, with Kaola one who may improve. ..'■-' : The other" three'events consist/of."a hack six, a hack seven, and a maiden race, so that the open horses have nothing for their participation, which is rare in the Dominion's racing. Both hack events have drawn fair fields in the way of numbers, but the class is little above maiden standard. In the Closeburn Hack Handicap, six furlongs, Arouse, Dampier, and Brigadore, who all hold double engagements, appear best on form, but Wyndale and Treasure Hunt are also prospects. In the Springrove Farewell Hack Handicap, Arouse, Revival, Dampier, and Popette have the only recent form, but Colenso, though he has not raced for some time, is fairly forward and does well .when. fresh. , ■ The Glenmore Maiden Race is practically a long list of the unknowns, with Popette and Trouvaille the only ones possessing any paper form, but Chalice is a two-year-old with some experience, and Delysia, Ihapera, and Pylon are sorts who might improve since they had their first and only racing to date. ' The following are among horses who may be backed:"— > 1 Riddiford Steeples.—The Storm Wind and War Eagle. Glenmore Maiden Race. —Chalice and Popette,(or Trouvaille).
