CHESS

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON

When play in the annual 20-a-side-telegraphic match between the Auckland and Wellington Chess Clubs ceased on July 13, no less than 15 games were not completed. Negotiations which have been proceeding between the two captains regarding these unfinished games reached finality on Saturday morning, when a telegram was received from Mr. H. OakleyBrowne, the Auckland captain, claiming wins for his side at boards .2 and 5, and suggesting that the remaining 13 games be abandoned as draws. This was regarded by the local executive as a fair settlement, and a telegram of acceptance was accordingly sent to Mr. Browne, the opportunity being taken to congratulate the Auckland team on its win, and to extend best wishes for its success when playing against the winners of the Otago v. Canterbury fixture for the club championship of New Zealand. This inter-island final is scheduled to commence on August 26. As a result of the negotiations the Auckland Chess Club defeats the Wellington Club by two games, the scores being as follows: — ■ . • . Bd. Auckland C.C. Wellington C.C. 1. There was no contest in 1931, as the Dominion's major clubs could not raise the necessary funds. From 1932 onwards this competition . has been conducted on the "sudden death" (or "onelife") system, and for three years running the inter-island final has been fought out by the Otago and Wellington Clubs. This year there may be a double change, as southern reports give the Canterbury Chess Club a good chance of gaining the right to represent the South Island in the grand final. Three evenings were often devoted to these telegraphic contests in the earlier matches. When the first Auckland v. Wellington contest was played 44 years ago the spectators at Wellington included the late Hon. John Ballance (Prime Minister) and his intimate friend, the late Sir Robert Stout, who founded the first Dunedin Chess Club in 1865, when M.H.R. for Caversham. The late Mr. Justice Denniston, a former president of the New Zealand Chess Association, who excelled in the 'end-game, was an interested spectator" at the 1902 and 1904 matches. The northern club was handicapped in the 1920 contest as,.owing to coal trouble, Auckland had neither electric light nor a tram service on that occasion. Mr. F. K. Kelling, the senior member of the local, club, is the only player who has been spared to take part in all these Auckland v. Wellington fixtures. •
