WAIKATO LAND SCHEME
REVIEWED BY FOUNDER : EXPENDITURE TO DATE ; (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, July 22. A review of the activities of the Waikato Land Settlement Society was. made by Mr. D; V. Bryant, founder and chairman of 'directors, in an ad-' dress to the Hamilton Rotary Clubtoday, if A. total of £10,592 had been spent in; land, while horses, harness, and t>lant? involved an expenditure! of .£3*io v '.sai<i. Mr. Bryant. A^sum of £6439 had been spent in wages, portion of which had been found by |he Unemployment^ Board. The cost of buildings ran into. £6127. On the 6000-acres owned by' the society JS2 homesteads had been erected in addition to 12 three-roomed hutments. Mr. Bryant said that at a recent meeting of the society's directors a proposal was considered whereby the settlement scheme could be extended. The Minister of Employment had been written to suggesting that unemployed men could be tried out and trained on the society's settlements, and if.'they proved satisfactory they could be recommended for farm, positions. .The, Unemployment Board would 'be'; required to pay the men's wages while employed nn the soristv's settlement.
