Mr. H. W. Clarke, of Wellington, arrived by the Makura from ' San Francisco.

Captain C. Renaut, formerly Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Lyttelton, accompanied by Mrs. Renaut, arrived by the Makura yesterday from San Francisco.

Mr. W. Cunningham, manager of the Greymouth office' of the Union Steam Ship Company, together with Mrs. Cunningham and their son, returned by the Makura yesterday.

Mr. S. B. Pilcher, of the Canadian Australasian Line, Vancouver, arrived by the Makura yesterday.

Mr. J. Ainger, of Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs. Ainger, returned by the Makura yesterday from Rarotonga, where Mr. Ainger was accountant to the Cook Islands' Trading Company.

Mr. H. E. Evans, of Wellington, returned from a short business visit to Sydney by the Marama this moming.

Mr. J. A. Hyndman, of Vancouver, British Columbia, arrived at Wellington by the Marama from Sydney today on a business visit to New Zealand. He intends to go to England from New Zealand, travelling via Japan.

Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, Australian Trade Commissioner, returned to Wellington by the Marama today, after a visit to Australia. . .

Mr. G. H. Mackley (general manager of the New Zealand Railways), Mr. G. W. Reid (a member of the Railways Board), and Mr. E. T. Spidy (workshops superintendent) left Wellington today by rail car for Auckland where there is to be a meeting of the Railways Board tomorrow. Members of the board are later to make a tour of inspection in the Auckland district.

Major J. R. Kirk, M.8.E., chairman of Dominion Headquarters, Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League and the Dominion Council of Boy Scouts, who has been visiting the Philippine and Celebes Islands, China, and Japan, returned to Wellington by, the Marama today.- He mentioned that Mr. S. T. Williamson, an old Wellingtonian and prominent ship owner and business man in the East, is rendering excellent service in Hong Kong as agent for the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. G. L. Stewart, representing parents, Mr. W. Mill, representing the Wellington Employers' Association, and Mr. A. C. Blake, representing the Education Board, have been re-elected members of the Wellington Technical College Board of Governors.

Mr. W. H. Bennett, chairman of the Wellington Technical College Board of Governors, is at present ill in hospital. Last night's meeting of the board passed him a vote of sympathy and expressed its hope for his speedy recovery.

Mr. J. Pearce.Luke was last night granted six months' leave of absence by the Welington Technical College Board of Governors, of which he is a member. He is to leave for England on August 17 on a health-recruiting voyage.

Mr. H. N. Huffadine, formerly of the literary staff of the Christchurch "Sun," has accepted a position on the literary staff of the "Adelaide News." He will leave Wellington for Australia today. Mr. Huffadine had been with the "Sun" for the last seven years.

Mr. Frank Hinton has joined the editorial staff of the "Otago DailyTimes," Dunedin. Mr. Hinton, who had been on the staff of the Christchurch 'Sun" for the last eight years, was, at the time of its merger, on its editorial staff

Professor F. F. Miles, of the Chair of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Victoria University College, Wellington, has been elected to the council of the New Zealand Astronomical Society.
