ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

(By "Rangatira.")

DAMPIER GALLOPS NICELY

WOTAN SHOWS TRUE FORM

Although ..the work being done on the Trentham tracks at present is not on an extensive scale, it is most interesting, and several of the horses at the centre are likely to be early winners, especially the members of T. R. George's team who are booked for Australia next month. The weather this morning was dull and cold, but it was Otherwise fine for the work, which was done on heavy going. .

Dampier (J. Forsyth) and Colenso (S. Wilson),, who .will be racing at Marton tomorrow, were sent half a mile, with Meritor (N. Vaughan) joining in after half a furlong. Dampier drew out early, and he was going well at the post still a couple of lengths ahead of Colenso, with Meritor another full length away. The time of 52 2-ssec was good standard under the conditions.

The actual race in which Dampier will start tomorrow is not. yet decided, but it is possible that George will start both him and Colenso in the hack six, in which case Wilson will be on Dampier. Dampier's owner, Mr. J. H. Marshall, of Titahi Bay, was present to witness the trial. .

George states that . Delysia, though an acceptor for tomorrow's maiden event, will not now be making the trip.

The Ranger returned only as far as Palmerston North after, his racing at Hastings last Saturday, and he will go on to Marton from there tomorrow. His showing in the Hawke's Bay Hunt Cup disappointed both his ownertrainer and his rider (F. Thompson). Thompson says he was never a prospect over the last circuit, not having the. pace of Prosy Boy or Panpadair, and he did not jump well either, taking off at his fences with poor measurement of the distance. He is capable of better, but he will require to improve to win tomorrow. George is leaving for Palmerston North this afternoon, and may put a rousing halfmile into him tomorrow morning if he thinks he has been doing too well while away.

The best trial of the morning -,vas accomplished by Wotan (Wilson), who is obviously at last recovering his autumn brilliance. He and Debham (R. Smith) jumped off from the halfmile, with Le Grand (Vaughan) joining in near the three furlongs, and although Le Grand beat the pair home Wotan easily accounted for Debham and ran the distance in 51 2-ssec, which he could have bettered. Prior to the recent Wellington Meeting Debham was beating Wotan, so the'latter's improvement during the last week or so is marked. Le Grand was hard to pull up after the gallop, and it looks as if he is going to be a trying colt to train.

Dollar Bill (J. McCi'uley) and Sunee (Wilson) were together throughout six furlongs in lrriin 21 3-ssec, the last halfmile in 54sec, but the seasoned Dollar Bill was doing it well at the close.

Princess Doreen (Wilson) beat Might (Vaughan) by half a length over the same distance in the same time, but they ran the, last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. Both are Working in pleasing style.

The ' rising two-year-old Cricket (Forsyth), who is to accompany George's team to Sydney for the Breeders' Plate, impressed in 'two short' sprints with Lady' Gold (McCauley). The first time he was well clear over three furlongs in' 39£ sec on the two-year-old track, and the second time he had to be held back to finish on terms, the sprint on this occasion being short of three furlongs. Cricket, who is owned by Mr. W. Higgins, is a big colt, but he gallops strongly and like a seasoned horse. Lady Gold, one of Mr. W. R. Kemball's horses, is a filly by Lord Quex from the Lucullus mare Missgold. Red Sun (G. Ridgway) and Nova Scotia (D. Bush) went over six of the schooling hurdles. Red Sun continued the improvementhhpep showed on Saturday, and. afterwards he galloped half a mile in 53sec. . His trouble a fortnight ago was in his feet, butjthis has now been corrected with shoeing. Nova Scotia jumped safely, but bungled some of the fences.

Billy Boy (Ridgway) and Verden (E. Burgess) gave a capital display over six hurdles, with Billy Boy doing the better. Billy Boy is definitely to run in the Grand National, all going well, and he and Verden will leave for the south next Monday evening.

G. Ridgway is to ride Royal King in the Maiden at Marton tomorrow, and he will again be on Revision at Riccarton. Wilson will be on T. R. George's horses in the flat events at Marton tomorrow, and at Manawatu on Saturday he will ride, besides George's horses, Miss Hushabye and Dorado.
