LYTTELTON SEAT
TOMOEEOW'S POLL
ABSENTEE VOTERS
The Lyttelton by-election, caused by the death of Mrs. E. K. McCombs, will take place tomorrow. There are four candidates—Messrs. T. H. McCombs (Labour), M. E. Lyons (Nationalist), E. L. Hills (Independent Labour), and G. S. Hamilton (Independant)—but the real fight is between Mr. McCombs and Mr. Lyons.
It is .expected that the result of the election will be known shortly after 8 o'clock. As is customary, progress returns will be posted on the front office window of the "Evening Post" as they come to hand. It is expected that the first return will be received in Wellington about ten minutes past seven.
Electors of Lyttelton who will be absent from the electorate on election day are privileged under the Electoral Act to exercise their votes on that day on making application at x any Post Office outside the electoral district of Lyttelton. This privilege extends only to persons whose names are on the Lyttelton roll and who still retain their residential qualification for the Lyttelton electorate.
Electors who have qualified for registration in another electoral district by three months' residence therein lose their "residential qualifications" for Lyttelton and are not entitled to vote for the by-election.
A person who is exercising his vote as an absentee voter is to make personal application to the Post Office, and before being handed a voting paper, he will be called upon to declare in writing that "his name is on the L'yttelton roll and that he is not qualified to be enrolled as an elector of any other electoral district."
All Post Offices throughout the Dominion, with the exception of those in the Lyttelton electorate, have been supplied with the necessary forms for voting. '
