NOTES

Fleming (Eastbourne), playing at first five-eighth, was the pivot of all attacks against Johnsonville. He frequently broke through himself, and m the second spell his persistent touch-finding had-a lot to do with keeping Johnsonville from scoring.

Avery, an Eastbourne forward, played on Saturday as a wing three-quar-ter, and performed with credit. He appeared to be quite familiar with the requirements of the position, and showed pace and initiative. ;

Eastbourne packed a solid scrum in the second spell against Johnsonville and took scrums instead of line-outs right through. Johnsonville had only seven-men against them, Behrant playing as an extra back or wing-forward.

Chancy was again the best of the Johnsonville backs. Playing at half he served his side well. Hancock, who scored the only try, is an cx-Melrose-Selwyn player, and he was playing his second game for Johnsonville.

M. Kenny (Johnsonviiie). gave another sound display at full-back, his fielding of the ball being safe. His touch-finding was lengthy and accurate, whilst he refused to be bustled. Crisp; whilst kicking with fine length and fielding well, was bustled on several occasions in the second spell.

Melrose-Selwyn gave University something of a shock at the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground. For a time towards the end of the second spell it was touch and go, as a matter of fact, whether University would be able to hold on to the lead.

There were several bright movements in the match between MelroseSelwyn and University. It is not often nowadays that a strong effective dribbling rush such as was turned on by the Melrose-Selwyn forwards is seen. Just how valuable they are was shown by the fact that Melrose-Selwyn scored from the fine effort made by their pack. The University backs provided two clashing concerted movements, each of which resulted in a try. Those efforts gave a touch of. Ihu spectacular to a keen game. : ,
