MUSSOLINI INTERVENES
Signora. Hosa Vecchio, aged 55, who was sentenced to life, imprisonment three years ago on a charge of killing her daughter, has been reprieved following a referendum held by a magazine, states the London "Daily" Express." ' The magazine asked its readers what they would say to Signor Mussolini about the case if they could speak to him. Among the replies was one from Signor Giuseppe Romualdi, the famous lawyer, who defended Signora Vecchio at her trial. He said he would ask Signor Mussolini to pardon the woman because of his absolute conviction that she was innocent. Signor Mussolini read the lawyer's reply in the magazine, and then ordered a thorough investigation into the case. This established that the woman had been sentenced solely on the flimsy evidence of a boy. Signor Mussolini thereupon recommended the King to grant Signora Vecchio a free pardon.
