LOWER HUTT STREET DAY
A meeting was held in the Lower Hutt Council Chamber to make arrangements for the holding of a "street day" collection in connection with the Queen Carnival contest to raise funds for furnishing the V.M.C.A.' building in Cuba Street, Petone.
Mr. J. W. Andrews (Mayor) presided, and there were present representatives of the V.M.C.A., Plunket Society, R.S.A., Leidertafel, Congregational and Trinity Churches, W.C.T.U., Girl Guides, St. James' and St. Stephen's Churches, Red Cross and Horticultural Societies, and the Lavrock Choir. It was a fully representative meeting of the various organisations in the Lower Hutt, and was an enthusiastic one.
Mr. Andrews said the meeting had been called at the request ol the Ladies' Auxiliary of the V.M.C.A., and the street day was being arranged to further the candidature of Miss Kempthorne, whom the ladies desired to see in the position o£ tho queen of the carnival He introduced Miss Kcmpthorne to the meeting.
Mr. Nicholson (president of the Lower Hutt V.M.C.A.), detailed the formation of the V.M.C.A. in the Valley, and gave a resume of the work that had been done.
It; was decided to hold the "street day" collection during August, permission for which had already been obtained. All present—to the number of 50 —were formed into a pr/ovisional committee, with power to add to their number. Officers were elected:—President, Mrs. H. W. Kersley; treasurer, Mr. Leslie; publicity, Mrs. E. Dawson and Messrs. Hayes and Carlson; executive, Mrs. Kersley, Mrs. Dawson, and Mr. Leslie.
Mr. Ashton (on behalf of the R.S.A.) offered to arrange a community sing as a preliminary function, and Mrs. Andrews was appointed convener of the collectors. It was left to a small committee to arrange for private functions prior to the street day. After Mr. Edwards (the secretary of the Y.M.G.A.) had detailed the activities of the association, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Andrews for calling the meeting and presiding.
