MAHENO HOLED
VESSEL WATERLOGGED
SALVAGE EFFORT ABANDONED
BRISBANE, July 14,
Attempts to salvage the stranded steamer Maheno at Frazer Island have been abandoned. The vessel is waterlogged, and is' heeling over to starboard, and there is a large hole hi her side through, which water is rushing. She is also deeply embedded in the sand.
It is staled that the Union Company sold the Maheno to the Japanese for £11,750, Australian currency, but, with other expenses since incurred, the total loss will be in the neighbourhood of £17,000, which is not covered by insurance.
The Oonah will pick up the Maheno's crew.
