STUDENTS' BUILDING
NO EARLY PROSPECT
ALLOCATION OF SITE
The question of the erection of a new Student Union building at Victoria University College was discussed at length at the annual meeting of the Students' Association ■ last night. The present building, it was agreed, was utterly inadequate.
"During the visit to Wellington of the director of tne Carnegie Institute," stated the annual report of the executive of the association, "the executive attempted, without success, to obtain a grant from this source. Considerable publicity centred on'the project during the capping celebrations, and the executive recommends that the numerous vague theories at present in circulation be subjected to early and close scrutiny, and, if found workable, put into operation. The end of the coming year should at least see' a site chosen, the plans drawn, and ap ■> active . and continuous canvass for funds in progress." ■ . "The committee has discussed the question of a site with the council," said,, the chairman, Mr; R. J. Nankervis, "but in" view of the fact that there is no prospect of a building being commenced for,,the next two or three years the council would not commit itself to allocating. a site at present."
The provision, of further accommodation for the .college.. would have to be considered in tbe near future, he said, and it was certain that the hollow below Salamanca Road would be filled in. The association had been making endeavours to-have that land dedicated to the college. The college council had also declined to give the association permission to apply for a share in the proceeds of an art union. He assured the meeting, however, that a definite move, /would be made during the next two or three years. "
The following officers have been elected to the Students' Association for the ensuing year:—President, Mr: R. C. Bradshaw; men's vice-president, Mr. H. R. C. Wild; women's vice-president, Miss H. K. Hurley; secretary, Mr. A. T. S. McGhie; executive, Misses J. Grainger, A. Harding, N. McLaren, and Messrs. W. R. Birks and A. H. Scotney.
