Mr. R. I. Simpson has been appointed conductor of the Lower Hutt Municipal Band. There were twenty-seven applicants for the position, and the appointment was made by the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night on the recommendation of the band committee, members of which spoke highly of Mr. Simpson's attainments. Mr. Kayo, who was band conductor for many years before the council decided to municipalise the band, was thanked for his services.
Mr. R. L. Gillies, superintending engineer <j>f the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, returned to Auckland by the Aorangi on Sunday from a business trip to the United Kingdom.
The Rev. V. A. Bianchi, who has been vicar of the Pahiatua parochial district for the past three years, has resigned his present cure and accepted the charge of that of Matamata in the Waikato diocese. The Rev. H. F. Wilson, 8.A., Vicar of the Paraparaumu parochial district since 1925, will be the Rev. V. A. Bianchi's successor at Pahiatua.
The Rev. F. G. Harvie, M.A., has been appointed to a ,canonry of St. Mary's Cathedral, Auckland, in sue-' cession to the Rev. Canon R. H. Hobday. Canon Harvie was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and at Wells Theological College, and at the present time is vicar of St. Barnabas', Mount Eden, in Auckland. He is a scholar of repute, a member of St. John's College Trust Board, and also one of the examiners for the Board of Theological Studies. He was formerly vicar of St. Mary's, New Plymouth, for some years.
The death occurred at Wellington last week of Mr. Harold G. Pank, a prominent figure in business and musical circles in Adelaide, South Australia. Pie had been in New Zealand for some four months on a health-recruit-, ing visit. Mr. Pank was a partner inJ the firm of Laubman and Pank, opticians, Adelaide. He devoted, a good deal of his time to optical research, and was very in the deliberations of the Optical Institute of South Australia. His work in this direction was known by' opticans throughout New Zealand,; and his loss will be felt • both by the Australian, and New Zealand Optical Institutes. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, and two sons, who are all residents of Adelaide. '
