CITY'S BEAUTY
SOCIETY'S APPEAL
TREE-PLANTING BENEFITS
An appeal to the business concerns of the city to regard a donation to the tree-planting funds of the Wellington Beautifying Society as something better than a gift to charity was made by Captain S. Hojm in an interview with a "Post" reporter "today. He said that he had circularised or seen sixty-three prominent Wellington business houses with regard to the offer by Mr. B. Sutherland of £100 for the planting 'of trees on the hills of Wellington if ten other donations of the same amount were forthcoming to the society. Other members of the society had approached other large concerns but so far the response had been exceedingly disappointing, the answer given in the majority of cases being that donations were made only to charitable institutions. > "As the money we collect will be spent on providing work for the unemployed it should be regarded as an excellent form of charity," said Captain Holm. "Our' funds will be subsidised by the Unemployment Board, and. practically all of them will be spent on labour, so that any donations will be providing work, which is more welcome than charity." In addition, he pointed out, the city and its business people would benefit from .any improvements that were made. ' The committee of the society is to meet at 8 p.m. on the last Monday of every month, and it is desirous of considering suggestions from citizens. Any ideas which might contribute to the beauty of the city should in the meantime be sent to Captain Holm, Box 1090. ■ At last night's committee meeting Mr. .Sutherland was, thanked for his generous offer and £100, and the whole committee agreed to assist in the carrying out of Mr. Sutherland's request for the raising of £1000 .more. It was agreed that the society.should undertake to commence the following works and special committees were appointed to take charge of them as follows: — v Planting of trees and preserving of remaining native bush on Hutt Road, Messrs.
