SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES

A letter from the country seeking co-operation in sending a sixteen-monlh-old baby, whose mother had died, to the Old Country, was received by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society at its meeting yesterday. The request was referred to headquarters for action. An aged person wrote thanking the society for purchasing an invalid chair which was proving a great boon to "The secretary of the Plunkel Society wrote Uianking Red Cross members for help on the society's street day. Several letters were received from the director of the Blind Institute regarding arrangements for the forthcoming visit of the- blind students band. The chairman stated that the Town Hall had been booked and every possible assistance would be eiven in co-operation with the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association to make the visit of the band a success. Further representations will be made at an early date to the council for free passes on the trams for the blind. At present a part concession only is made. The chairman reported that as a result of the Quetta earthquake appeal made by the centre-the sum of £54 16s lid had been collected. This included recent donations from the Upper Hutt sub-centre, £2 2s; J. M., A. Ilott, £2 2s; and Anonymous, Masterton, £5. This would be remitted to headquarters for transmission to tne Indian Red Cross Society. Satisfaction was expressed at tne good work done by Mrs. Hurd-Wood in' connection with the Hard of Hearing League. An executive had been set up and rooms acquired for this work. Much interest was being taken in the instructional classes. Now that an executive had been set up, the secretarial work would be handed over to that body. , .. ~ . It was resolved to make application to headquarters for Wellington's quota of the £200 released for the relief of distress from the recent art union. The special committee set up in connection with the Red Cross Ball reported 'that ■ excellent progress had been made and much interest was being taken. An appeal was made for support, as the function would be deyoteci to the furtherance of the society s work in the community. ■ Donations amounting to £24 17S were gratefully acknowledged. Thanks were also expressed for the following sifts in kind:—Books, Women's Club, Mrs Gayford, number of anonymous donors. Mrs. Donovan, Mrs. Gotheb; beds, Mrs. Olsen, Anonymous, Queen s Drive, Anonymous, Northland Road; knitted garments, Mrs. .Uttley, Lady Hunt. Anonymous; clothing, Miss Ardrey, Paekakariki sub-centre of the N.Z. Red Cross Society (Inc.), Mrs. Heineman, Mrs. Rickman, Miss Little, Miss Hayes, Mrs. Moore, Mr. Tanner, Mrs. Gotlieb, Mrs. Goldblatt, a number of anonymous donors, and Mrs. Barker; vegetables, groceries, and mismellaneous foodstuffs, Wellington Girls' College Junior Red Cross Circle. '
