♦ COMPETITION MATCHES FAST PLAY AT STADIUM One of the best exhibitions of Rugby League seen in Wellington this season was given at the Winter Show Stadium on Saturday when Petone met and defeated Central in another match for the Walmsley Shield. The first spell was fairly even, the half-time scores being 5 to 3 in Petone's favour, but in the second spell Petone showed a marked superiority, and finished by defeating . Central by 28 points to 11. , In the second competition game, played on the Randwick School ground, Randwick defeated St. George. Petone is now leading in the competition by a substantial margin, with Randwick second. ■ 1 The teams in the Petone-Central ! match were:— Petone. —Warsaw; Fisher, Scorringe, Nixon; Cunningham, Kyle; Scrimshaw; !A. Kreyl (captain); B. Kreyl, Boswell; McCaskill, Pilcher, Dodds. Central.—Thorburn; Kennedy, Merson (captain). Holmes; Dustin, Elliott; Foster; Worsley; Cunningham. ,Kidd; O'Halloran, Swanson, Mahar. There were some good combined movements in the early stages of the game, the first score resulting from a passing rush 'by the Central backs ■which culminated in a try by Kennedy. Central 3, Petone 0. O'Halloran missed the kick. Petone were not long in retaliating. Pilcher made an opening for Scorringe, who swerved smartly to avoid two of the Central defenders and scored an excellent try. He took the kick 'himself and added two more points. Petone 5, Central 3. Mahar and another took the ball up the line, and fast exchanges .ensued on the Petone line. Warsaw was showing that he had plenty of pace, and was kicking well. From a scrum the ball went out to Holmes on the Central wing, and back to Dustin and Elliott in a brilliant movement. Boswell went away on his own for Petone, dived just on the line, and missed scoring by inches. The score was unaltered when the half-time whistle blew. A brilliant piece of work by Dustin marked the opening of the second half. The ball, went out the back line to him, and he cut in and scored neatly. O'Halloran's kick failed. Central 6, Petone 5. Petone took the lead when from a scrum near the line Dodds picked up and scored. The kick failed. Pe'tone 8, Central 6. In succeeding play Elliot, Dustin, Kennedy, and Merson were prominent. Further tries for Petone were registered by A. Kreyl, ■' Pilcher, and Nixon (2), McCaskill adding the extra points in each case. For Central Elliott kicked a penalty goal, and Holmes scored. Mr. V. M. Simpson was the referee.
