ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

HEAVY GOING AFTER RAIN

ORAPAI DOES BEST HALF

(By "Rangatira.")

The storm that burst with fury ot. Wellington during Saturday night had still not abated when work began at Trentham this morning, but during the next couple of hours the outlook improved and by mid-forenoon only a very light drizzle was falling, with the prospects overhead decidedly brighter, though the wind was still at gale force. The rain of course had ruined all chance of good tracks for this week's racing, but though the going will now be heavy it may not be quite so bad as the average for winter meetings at Trentham. The trial grass was soft and slippery for the work this morning. *. Most of the visitors are now on hand, but though they were all out on the tracks not:much serious work against the clock was done. They wei-e all galloping in bunches and one watch could not time them all, but the more important' of the gallops observed are recorded below. Glenvane easily beat Refresher over seven furlongs in lmin 35sec, the last half-mile in 56Jsec. Glenvane handled \ the conditions better than his mate. Sunny Maid did half a mile in 54sec, and might have bettered -the time. Gopenna ran the distance in 53sec. Dollar Bill came down from the three furlongs in 40sec. Wahine Nui again attracted by the way in which she put half a mile behind in 52sec. Hunting Jay was a length in front of Esteem after running seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, the last half-mile in 56sec. Isaacs, appearing at home in the going, beat Imasurvey by a couple of lengths over half a mile in 53Asec. Orapai did the best half-mile clocked in beating Hunting Lodge by a length in 51 2-ssec, thus showing that the going was not as bad as it could be. Water Power was stopping half a length in front of Brown Pearl at the end of half a mile in 56sec. Full Throttle ran 55sec alone. Stanchion, who looks in fine order, did six furlongs in lmin 24sec, the last half-mile in 55|sec. Lord Val strode over half a mile easily in 56sec. Gold Fox pleased in beating Lapel by three-quarters of a length over half a mile in 52 l-ssec. Curie was three lengths in front of Sisterina after traversing five furlongs in • lmin Bsec, the last half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Solaria was too good for Abbey Feale, but was.not timed. Astarth, under a hold, was with Kia Tina at the end of half a mile in 54sec. Merry Peel ran three furlongs in 42sec. Good Hunting, though not timed, appeared to be going well at the close of his half-mile with a mate. Collision ran half' a mile comfortably in 55sec. It was impossible to ascertain who some of the other horses who galloped were, but there did not appear to be anything outstanding among them. Very little schooling was done over the hurdles.- Prince Val (R. Thomson), who has apparently quite recovered from his Saturday's soreness, jumped two fences well. ■ Swift. and Sure (R. Drinkwater) fenced fast and true over four obstacles, and he seems to be an improving sort for the hack hurdle events at the meeting. The first to go over- the country were Cardhu (J.'Mcßae) and Petrarch (A. McDonald), both jumping safely, with the former giving the better display. ; Riotous (J. Mcßae) and Tudor (P. Burgess) jumped the four fences brilliantly, but Sir Musk (B. Sullivan), who was to have accompanied them, again ran off every fence after, getting over the sod wall. Tudor looks better than it was expected he might, and he has Evidently had a full preparation. His jumping was near perfection. The Ranger (R. Smith), Cotsfield (J. Walsh), and Monastic (R. Drinkwater) also went over the. four fences. The Ranger, jumping splendidly, led over the first three, but Cotsfield ran up to be on terms for the last. Monastic was not far back and went much better than on Saturday. Among those to jump yesterday were Dunmure and London, both of whom, particularly London, gave good exhibitions. Their work was confined to pacing this morning, as was also the work of the other steeplechasers on the scene. Transact and Dozie are the only Wellington Steeples candidates who do not appear to be yet at Trent-

ham. There were no further scratchings besides Autopay and Arouse up till noon today. .
