PEDIGREES AND WINNINGS

In all the Racing Calendar there is nothing to equal the steeplechase for thrill and > enjoyment, and naturally the great interest at next-week's Wellington Winter Meeting at Trentham will be centred in the Wellington Steeplechase on Tuesday. There are thirteen acceptors for this year's field, and the form has already been traversed in close detail, but now it is proposed to give a snort summary iof breeding, ownership, and record of all the runners, so that racegoers may know very accurately the complete credentials of all the candidates. The following details have been carefully collected, and so far as the records are available they are complete and accurate. , Without further intrbduction the summary will'be .presented, being as follows:—

Valpeen, I.l.4—Brown gelding by Valkyrian from a mare of unknown pedigree, but believed to liavo been by Spalpeen. Seven years. Bred, owned, and trained by Mr. Ciordon Campbell, of Okoroire, near Matamata. Dam bought by Mr. Campbell for £1. Began racing at five years, and has started 42 times for eight wins and £2010 in stakes, of which £1480 lias been earned this season. Best wins Great Northern Steeples, Grand National Steeples, Sussex Steeples (staffed in honour of Duke of Gloucester), and Pnkuranga Hunt Cup. Tuesday's rider, W. J.'Bowden. Riotous, 11.1—Black gelding by Blrkdale from the All Black mare Cross Word. Six years. Bred by Mrs. M. G. Mclntosh and owned by his trainer L. Knapp, of Awapuni. Began lacing as a' late three-year-old, second first start, and has started in all 40 times for fourteen wins and £2004 in stakes, of which £410 has been earned in six starts this season. He has been a remarkably consistent performer, having been out of the money only seven times in his forty starts. Best wins July . Steeples (Trentham), Mangere Steeples (Eilerslio), Egmont Steeples, and Wanganui Steeples. Was third in last Wellington Steeples, but fell heavily at Cutts's fence in the Grand National, and had to be sent out for spell. liider, J. Mcßae. Billy Boy, 10.11—Brown gelding by Archiestown from the Phoebus Apollo mare Lady Lila. Ten years. Bred by Mr. H. Hothery, and now owned by his trainer, R. \V. A. ' Lewis, of Trentham. who acquired him last year from his former owner, Mr. G. ,T. Quirke. Began racing as a three-year-old, but after one start was off tiie scene till a late six-year-old as the result of an accident while hunting. Has started 52 times for nine wins and £3720 in stakes, but only placed performances in nine starts this- season have been thirds in the Grand National and • Autumn Steeples (Ellerslie). Best wins Grand National, Wellington Steeples (twice) Autumn Steeples (Ellerslie), Winter Steeples (Ellerslie), and Brighton Hurdles. ltider, E. Burgess. ' • Tudor, 10.11—Brown gelding by Little England from the Archiestowu mare Miss Archie. Five years. Bred and owned by Mr. B. Brewer, of. Cambridge, and trained by L. Knapp. Began racing at three years, and has started 22 times for six wins and £770 10s in stakes. Last winter he) was in great form, winning the Maniapqto Hack Steeples, Greenlano Steeples, Panmure Hurdles, and Tamaki Steeples in sequence, but ho then went amiss on the, eve of tho Wellington Meeting and did not reappear till last autumn, since when he has been three times unplaced. Has started in all 19 times for seven wins and £765 in stakes, of which £415 has been earned this season He has been out of the money only seven times, threo times on the flat, once in a hurdles, and twice when he fell in steeples Best wins. Seven years Bred and owned by I)r. A. McGregor Grant of Rcmucro, Auckland, and trained by It. J. Mateer, of Matamata. Begn'n racing as a 'late four-year-old, over fences at once, and has started 13 times for four wins and £1180 in stakes, of which. £810 has been earned this season. He has been nn unsound horse and has made only occasional appearances. Best wins A.R.C. Winter Steeples, Pakuranga Huntx:iip, and A.R.C. Hunt Club Cup (twice). Rider, D. J. Burgess. Ruby Meteor, 9.ll—Chestnut mare by Day Comet from an unraced mare of unknown pedigree named Ruby. Seven years Bred and owned by Mr. A." Totman, of Okoroire and trained by J. P. Tutchen at Te Rapa Had one start ,as a late three-year-old, three starts the following season, and thirteen starts as a five-year-old, ail without success but opened .her score .last season. In all she has started on 51 occasions for six wins and £1040 in stakes, of which £535" has been earned this season. Pahu, 9.3—Brown gelding by Warplano from the Sarto mare Cinnamon, dam also of Pango. Nine years. Bred by Mr. J. Brice and now being raced by Mr. .T. W. Ci. Brodie, of Wellington, and the Trentham trainer C. Pritchard in partnership. Began racing as a four-year-old, and was a good performer on the flat before he took to jumping, but he has been most unlucky In big events. In all has started 97 times for eleven wins and £2031 in stakes.' of which only £200 has been earned without a win yet this season. His best season was his first, when he won £(135. Dozio, 9.o—Brown mare by Lucullus from the Demosthenes mare Prosy, a descendant of a good jumping family. Seven years. Owned and trained by her breeder, Mr. C. E. Twist, of Napier. Began racing only last season, when she ran second In the Hawke's Bay Hunt Cup, and has started in all only seven times for two wins and three seconds, worth £223 In stakes. Her two wins were in the recent Hawke's Bay .Tune Steeples and the Xapier Steeples. Itidcr, probably O. Webby. Spalpiko. 9.o—Chestnut gelding by Spalpeen from an unraced Quin Abbey mare who was named Wild Time. Ten years. Bred by Mr C M Alexander, of Mangapilii, and 'owned and trained by Mr. 11. R. Clarke, of Te Kawn (near Tc Awamutti), who during his earlier career raced him in partnership with Mr H. L. Kussell. Had his first race at flvo years, and has started 35 times in all for five wins and £1010 in stakes. He did not race at eight years, and his best wins were in the A.R.C.
