MAN'S KNITTED PULLOVER

For holiday, weekend or sports wear a hand-knitted pullover similar to the one illustrated here would be a very useful possession for any man, and would prove a much appreciated gift. Materials required, lib 'of Totem wool, dark brown; 1 pair each of Nos. 9 and 14 needles. Measurements: Round chest 40in, across shoulders 16in, sleeve seam 20in, full length of jumper 23in. Tension: 5 stitches to lin in .width, and 7 rows to lin. , Back: Cast on 100 stitches, using the No. 14 needles, and work in single rib for 3in; change to No. 9's and pattern, which consists of the following, rib: * K. 2, p. 3, k. 3. p. 2, k. 3, p. 2, repeat from * to end of row. In the next row knit plain over purled stitches in previous row and purl over plain stitches. Repeat these two rows throughout. When work measures 15in from the beginning shape armholes as follows: — Cast off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and k. 2 together at each end every row till there are only 76 stitches left. Work on these for 23in, then cast off 4 stitches at beginning of next 12 rows and cast off remaining 28 for back of neck. Front: Work the same as the back until work measures 13in, then divide for neck. Divide stitches in half and join in second ball of wool. Knit 2 together at centre' edge' on both halves every 4th row. When side seam is the same length as back cast off 8 stitches at beginning of next 'row at each armhole edge and k. 2 together at each armhole 4 times. This will be a de-

crease of 24 stitches altogether. From now on work this edge straight, still decreasing at neck edge until there are only 24 stitches left each side. Work-on these till jumper. meaures 23in, then shape as at back and >cast off.

Sleeve: Cast on 50 stitches. Work 4in of singlei rib, change to No. 10's and work in pattern at beginning, and end, of every Bth row; increase Ist until sleeve measures 20in, then shape top by k. 2 together each end of every row until only 16 stitches remain. Cast off arid make second sleeve the same.

To Make Up: Join shoulder seams and knit up the stitches round the neck, using ,4'No. 14's: work in single rib for lin.'knitting 3 stitches together at centre front each row. Cast off firmly, bringing the V-cdge on the slope to about lOin. Sew up sleeves and side seams, and press lightly under .a damp cloth. ■ ■
