VALEDICTORY
MR. H. B. CORDON
The staffs of the Wellington branches and head office of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., met yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr. H. B. Gordon, assistant ■ general manager, who is retiring on pension after 45 years' unbroken service with the bank. . ' . Sir James Grose, general manager, in referring to the nany excellent qualities possessed by' Mr. Gordon, stated that while he was very, glad indeed that Mr. Gordon should enter upon his well-deserved period of leisure in good health, both he himself, and the staff generally would miss very greatly the genial and valuable help which they had so long enjoyed from Mr. Gordon. In presenting to Mr. Gordon an inscribed gold wristlet watch and a wallet of notes as an expression, of appreciation from the staff throughout New ' Zealand,'' Sir James stated that he had received' very many letters .from, the bank's.branches expressing deep appreciation of Mr. Gordon's sterling qualities and ■ emphasising the affectionate regard in. which he was held.' He wished both Mr. and Mrs. Gordon very many years of health and happiness. Mr. T. H. Easdown,- manager of the bank's Auckland branch, stated that he had been first associated with Mr. i Gordon in. Auckland many years ago, and from the intimate knowledge of Mr. Gordon's ability and character which he had gained in the intervening years he' was certain that Mr. Gordon was retiring with the best of good wishes from the bank's staff throughout the Dominion. Speaking in reply, Mr. Gordon thanked the staff for their kindness in marking his retirement with the gifts he' had just received, and thanked Sir James for his kind remarks regarding Mrs. Gordon. Mr. Gordon referred to various incidents in his early experience as a bank officer and to the vicissitudes of banking in New Zealand during the 45 years of his service with 'the National Bank. He had always appreciated the willing help he had received from the officers around him, both in the head office and 'in the branches, and he felt sure that if the present staff gave of their best in the service of the bank they need have no fear of the future.
The proceedings terminated with three hearty cheers for Mr. Gordon, repeated for Mrs. Gordon, by the very large attendance of National Bank officers present -•:-•' [
