"Pertinax," commenting on Mr. MacDonald's retirement in the "Echo de Paris," declares that the Premier dur*
ing the past year seemed a complaisant and disillusioned puppet. He was a familiar figure, in the great houses of London, but all hope placed in him proved false. His European projects failed and his practical moderate Socialism had negligible results.
"Le Journal," on the contrary, pays a tribute to his graceful' exit from politics. . t
