CIVIC DECENCY LACKING
Though some householders apparently cannot be convinced of the fact, the men and officers who attend :to"th'e not too pleasant, job of keeping the city clean and healthy do go aboutl their work with good and honest intent, collecting in city and suburbs and disposing of tons and tons of refuse in. the most effective way within economic reason. A series of public holidays comes and upsets the routine and * storm of complaints, accusations, and unpleasant, often unfair, criticism descends on the men.who do the work.. Now they, in turn, are doing some coinplaining, about unauthorised dumping of lorry-loads of rubbish, obviously trade refuse, at various convenient points about the seafront. A particuv larly bad case of this sort has messed up the foreshore opposite the official tip at Maranui, the offence having evidently been committed by a carrierwho must have made several night., trips to dump such a quantity- and.so. unsightly a variety. On one side of the road men are working to dispose of refuse in such a way as to create nonuisance and to turn waste land into an ■■ area which will later be available a» an attractive reserve, and on the other a dirty dump is being created by. people whose sense of civic duty if not, [developed. .
