BIG CROWD AT AUCKLAND

nie Auckland Boxing Association staged on Monday evening one of the brightest programmes that has ever been presented, to the Auckland public (states the "New Zealand Herald"). The professional contest between R. B. Martin, of Auckland, and "Marine" Ryan, of H.M.S. Dunedin, was won by Martin on points at the end of the ten scheduled rounds. There was perhaps too much defensive fighting to make the bout really attractive, but over the later stages it was very bright indeed. ;

Ryan proved himself an experienced boxer and his cleverness' clearly had Martin puzzled over the earlyc rounds, but, once he gained confidence, the Aucklander was seen to'greater advantage. " ..■•'■'■•:

The early stages of the contest promised a disappointing exhibition.' Ryan displayed great ringcraft and excellent defence, proving very hard to. hit. Ha did not waste so many punches as Martin. However, once the Aucklander gained confidence he scored more freely with both hands. He was the mora aggressive of the pair over |he later stages and thoroughly earned the decision, which did hot meet witli universal approval. Ryan's forte was undoubtedly in-fighting, where he scored many points, but Martin disdained defensive tactics in favour of the attack.

The attendance was the largest seen at a boxing tournament in Auckland for some years, and, judging by the almost continuous cheering and applause, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the entire programme.
