THREE TRIALS NEXT WEEK

The task of the New Zealand Rugby football selectors has not been simplified to any extent by the trials which have been played to date, although in some cases there have been outstanding performances which place the players responsible for them in a more favourable position. On the whole, fcowever, the trials have revealed that Siany of the players put forward have £<en flattered in being regarded as up ta sS'w Zealand representative standard. Not a few have been handicapped by the fact that they have been placed with players who have been a handicap to* them in their endeavour to show their real worth as candidates. No doubt the keen eyes of the selectors will have noticed this, and it is to be expected that such players, unfortunate in one trial, will be given another opportunity. But chances are now limited, as was pointed out in "The Post" this week. Excluding the match at Christchurch today, there are but three trials, all to beplayed next week, remaining before the selectors complete the team for the big tour. Quite a number of worthy candidates have not yet had a' trial, and the wash-out at Napier must make the position more difficult in that the players in that match should be entitled to an' appearance before the New Zealand selectors under better circumstances. Much now has to'be crammed into a little space, and it is a pity that the final selection of. players could not.be deferred in order to permit of an extra trial match being played, especially as the conditions were so bad for the trial at Napier. It is. hard to realise that the New Zealand' team is to be selected next Saturday. .'■■:.
