A SMART JUMPER

(By "Isobel.")

•A jumper knitted in a matching fleck shade gives smart relief to a tweed suit or great-coat. The jumper with bib ■ collar, illustrated here, ■is knitted in a chrome yellow shade of 4-ply wool. The main stitch is in a basket weave design with,a band of garter stitch down the centre front and back of jumper! A band of garter stitcli also outlines „ the. bib collar and the-raglan sleeves.

Measurements.—To fit 38in bust; sleeve, 20in (may be worn rather full over the tight-fitting cuff); full length of jumper, 20in. Materials Required.—Ten ounces of 4-ply super wool ' in bright ' yellow; four No: 14 needles; four No. 11 needles; two press studs; 'one button mould;

Tension.—Seven sts. tolin in width; nine rows to ,lin.. The size .of ,the

~ jumper may-be altered* by adding or subtracting the number of sts. required, according to the tension, e.g., to fit a 35in bust, cast on 130 sts. back and front. ' DIEECTIONS. : The back and front . are knitted separately until the armholes, when four needles must be used. Using the No. 14 needles, cast on 140 sts. and work ,in rib of 1 plain, 1 purl, for 4in. Change to No. 11 needles. From now on work the middle six sts. of back and front in garter st. through-; out and the rest of the jumper in pat-* tern of 2 purl, 2 plain rib, for three rows, then change for.next three rows, placing the purl over the plain and • plain over the purl, thus making a basket pattern. ' '. Knit on in this pattern for lOin. > above ribbing and leaving 'these stsj on the needles. Work the other half ' the same and then start the sleeves. Using the 14's, work 4in ol single ' rib on 60 sts.; now change to pattern and No. 11's and work on, increasing one st. each end of needle every nine ■ rows, until sleeve measures 19in long iin centre. Make the other to corres- ■ pond. From now on the four pieces 1 will all be worked together on four . needles. Knit the first and last three I sts. of back and front and two sleeves . in garter st., thus making a strip of six . garter sts. at each junction of bodice and sleeves. All shaping.is to be done I on the pattern side of these strips. The ■ shaping is as,follows: In every alter--1 nate row knit 2 tog. at beg., and end 1 of each section, i.e., decrease two sts. I on front and two on back, and two on : each sleeve, or eight., every alternate r row. *

When work measures, 4in on the straight from beginning of armhole, .divide the sts. equally in the back by turning and working back towards the front. Thii will form.- the' centre back opening. Cast on an, extra four sts. on left-hand side and, work up in garter st. t to form flap for clips. When Jin'has been done; or work measures 4£in from armhole, cast off the'centre 122 sts. of front to form neck opening. !The work is now divided into two, so ' work each side separately. • Continue i shaping at armholes and at the1 same time k. 2 tog. at neck edge every other | row. When work measures 7in on the straight from beginning of armhole, cast off and work the other >' side to correspond. With wrong side of work towards you, knit up 42 sts. across front of neck, using the. No. 11 needles. Work in pattern with the centre six sts. in garter st. and decrease, one st. each end of needles every row till only the middle six sts. remain. Make a buttonhole by casting off the middle four sts. and casting them on again in next row. Cast off. Knit a four st. wide garter st. band on No. 14's to go round back of neck and round collar. Crochet a cover for the button, and "stitch on. TO MAKE UP. Pin out- to required > measurements on an' ironing board and press lightly under a damp cloth. \
