WIDESPREAD 1000 KILLED AT QUETTA

CALCUTTA, May 31. Widespread lisivoc was caused by an earthquake otf great intensity which rocked iNiWthern India at 3 o'clock tliis montiftng. The • epicentre believed to have been in South Afghanistan, 150 miles north-west of Quetta. Quelta was the i severest sufferer. All communications were broken, but wireless messages report that the city was devastated and that over 1000 people were) killed, including prominent European Government officials and wives and. children.
Forty-three members of the Royal Air Force were killed, and 30 are missing. '
The whole police; force is said to have been .wiped o^it. The Staff Collegej it is understood, was not severely aiffecteei. All the staff officers are saf-ei. The town of Mashing, about thirty miles from was destroyed, four-fifths q>{ the population being killed. Sevei-e damage was done to the surroundjing villages.
