NEW LICENCES
MOTOR REGISTRATIONS
RECORD DAY YESTERDAY
To cope with the final rush for reregistration of motor-vehicles, the Post Office this week adopted the expedient of the retail trade in having a "late night." Yesterday, at every post office where there had been more than 750 registrations of motor-vehicles last year, this phase of the work, instead of ceasing at 4 p.m., was continued until 9 o'clock, and' all other offices conducting money-order business extended the day by an hour.
At all the motor registration offices special information officers assisted the work by helping motorists to fill in the forms, thus reducing the time taken at the counter and materially expediting business. It is too early to give accurate figures regarding this year's total of registrations throughout the Dominion, but taking Wellington as an indication a decided increase is likely to be shown over the number of cars registered on May 31, 1934, the latest Wellington total showing an addition of at least a thousand. The effect of advice published by the newspapers to register early has been demonstrated in Wellington, where the registration officers report that the work has gone on much more smoothly than in previous years.
The registration of 1609 motorvehicles in Wellington yesterday constituted a day's record. The number of motor-vehicles licensed in this area is 1472 in excess of that for the corresponding period of last year, the total being 9048, representing 70 perj cent, of the number of- motor-licences current in the city.
