ITALY'S ROAD RACE

THOUSAND MILE RESULTS

The Mille Miglia (Italy's 1000-mile road race) was run on April 14'. The winners were:— 1. Pintacu'da and Dellaseufa (3-litre Alfa-Romeo), 14hr 4min 47sec (71-72 m.p.h.). 2. Tadini and Chiari (3-litre AlfaRomeo), 14hr 46min 48sec. 3. Battaglia and Tuffanelli (3-litre Alfa-Romeo), 15hr 4min Bsec. Last year Varzi won with a 2.6-litre Alfa-Romeo, averaging 70.87 m.p.h. Varzi was the only first-class driver in the race this year, but proved innocuous, his machine, a converted Maserati, never showing its true paces. It cracked up early in the race and the Alfa-Romeos were left unchallenged. Though it had been confidently expected that 100 cars would start, the actual number was 86. Two amateur English drivers did very well, winning the 1500 c.c. class, also the amateur class and' a special prize for first foreign car to finish. They were Clarke and Faulkner, driving an Aston Marton. Both are said

[to have had no previous road racing experience. The probable winner of the 1500 c.c. I class, however, was the Italian Scarfiotti (li-litre supercharged Maserati), who well on in the race lay third and was desperately trying to be first. It had a fatal termination, however, for he collided with a private car that dashed out into the road ahead of him. Two women were killed and both j Scarfiotti and his mechanic were in- j jured. Never before had a 1500 c.c. car occupied so high a position in the race.

The 1100 c.c. class went to two Italians, Bianco and Bertocchi (Maserati), who finished seventh in the race, averaging 65.98 m.p.h.
