BETTING BY JOCKEYS

OWNERS OF GREYHOUNDS?

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, May 24.

During the last week or two there has been a flurry in official circles over the alleged betting by jockeys. At Randwick J. Pratt was brought before the stewards to explain a wager of £2, but satisfied the officials that it was for a friend.

Pratt, incidentally, was under suspension, and the technical point was raised whether he was under the jurisdiction of the stewards at the time.

Last week several leading jockeys were called in to verify statements or otherwise that they were regular patrons Of the greyhound race meetings, and whether they .were owners of hounds and regular bettors. It has aroused no little discussion and opened up the question whether the licensees are under the control of the A.J.C. when they go on to the tin-hare or trotting tracks.

The Rules of Racing prohibit betting by jockeys, and say they shall not bet or receive monetary gifts except from the owner of a horse ridden by them.

No immediate action is likely, but when licences are reviewed in July there may be some repercussions.
