WATERSIDE AND MARIST

The game of paramount interest to Soccer enthusiasts last Saturday was the clash between Waterside and Marist at the Basin Reserve.

..These two teams provided a clean, spectacular, and at times thrilling contest, particularly during the last few minutes of the match when excitement ran high. Although for a considerable period at one stage of the game play remained at half-way, it was there that some pretty half-back work was Witnessed, the footwork being most outstanding. From this play the forward rushes that were such a feature of the game were initiated, and pleasing combination effected. This applied to both teams.

Turkington, goalkeeper for Marist, had a lot of work to do last Saturday, especially towards the end of the first spell. He acquitted himself with credit. His vis-a-vis, Cummings, likewise did well. His torrid time came in the last ten minutes When the light began to fail. Some of his saves were really brilliant. Abernethy and Hazel (Waterside) were very safe ( in defence, nor were they slow in seizing opportunities on attack. Hazel distinguished himself in this respect on two occasions during the progress of the game. Waterside's half-back line are.a very energetic trio. Cocks impressed, particularly in the second spell.

Waterside undoubtedly possess a solid vanguard. Janes is the stylist of the quintet. His quickness in' changing the venue of play is admirable. Thompson, Wilson, McGrath, and Nicolle all played well. Nicolle's goal in collaboration with Janes was brilliant.

■ Mr. J. Graham, the referee, came in for a lot of praise. Undoubtedly his work was of a high standard.

Mahonejr and Duffy came through

with flying colours on Saturday. They are both sound exponents of full-back play. ■ Hindle, Foley, and T. Quirke gave a delightful display of half-back play. Their nippiness was very troublesome to Waterside's forwards. The duel between Foley and Janes (Waterside) was worth watching.

Among the Marist forwards Kershaw and Hatchard were particularly prominent though all played well.
