SELECTIONS OF TRIAL TEAMS

]S 0 PRESENT CONCERN ABOUT OMISSIONS

"What is the idea of not playing Lilburne, Griffiths, Page, Kilby, and Andrews in the Wellington-Wairarapa team?" That question is asked by a well-known Kugby man in the South Island, and it is one which still seems to be exercising many minds. As has been already pointed out, there appears toTTave been a desire to see how some players measure up to the standards of which other players are known to be^capable, and that is regarded as accounting for the absence of a number of Wellington's foremost players—Pollock is another overlooked by the southern enthusiast —from the trial at Wanganui today. From. inquiries made in official quarters it seems to be almost certain that the players mentioned will be seen in later trials; in t*ct, some of them on form stand very excellent chances of being included in the New Zealand team, and, indeed, it would be a surprise' if some were left out. The announcement this week of the teams for the South Island trial makes it more apparent that a process of elimination is not being followed. There are bound to be recalls for later trials, and it will certainly not be a case of choosing the whole twenty-nine for England from the teams in the final trial at Wellington. By that time the New Zealand selectors will have reached a decision regarding the filling of a number of places in the-team. Meanwhile they are proceeding on their strenuous course of investigation—at Wahganui today, at Auckland on Monday, at Napier next Thursday, and at Christchurch next Saturday, after which they double back to Palmerston North and then come on to Wellington for the two last trials. .
