POLO NECK SWEATER

This i polo neck sweater knitted in' oblique stitch looks particularly attractive, and worn with a polo coat would make a smart and cosy jumper. Measurements.—Bust, 34in; full length, 20in; shoulders, 4Jin; sleeve, >19in. Materials Required.—Seven ounces of 3-ply super wool in white; one pair No. 10 needles; lour No. 14 needles..

Tension.—Seven stitches to liri, 17 rows to 2in. PATTERN. Ist row: S. 1, *k. I—k. 3 tog. but do not take them off the left-hand needle. K. again in the Ist st. of the three that were knitted tog. and pass it on to the right-hand needle: K. the 2nc st.' in the same way and let tne 3rd st. drop off the left-hand needle, without knitting it a second time.* Repeat from * to • and then knit the last two sts. separately in the usual way. 2nd row: Purl. 3rd row: S. 1, * k. 3 tog. and then work these three sts. a second time exactly as in the first row. K. 1, * repeat from •■ to *. 4th row:.Purl. These four rows constitute the pattern and are repeated throughout. Front: Using No. 14 needles, cast on 120 9ts., and rib 1 plain, 1 purl, for 4in. In last row increase four extra sts.— 124 in all. Change to No. 10 needles and work in pattern, for 10in, then shape armholes by casting off three sts. at the beginning of the next six rows, then decrease by k. 2 tog. a1 the beginning and'end of the next three purl rows; continue in pattern on these 100 sts. until work is 3Jin from start of shaping, then k. 50 sts. in pattern. K. 2 tog. Turn. Purl 2 tog., purl to end. Continue to decrease two sts. tog. every row on neck edge until only 20 sts. are left, then k. 2 tog. twice at neck edge on pattern row, still decreasing once on purl side, until only four sts. are lelt,- and arm~ hole is now 7in on straight. Cast pff and work other side to correspond. Back: Work the same as for front, but start decreasing for neck edge, when work is 4Jin, alter armhole shaping, and decrease by k. two sts. tog. twice on pattern side of work every row until four sts. are left. Cast off. Sleeve: Cast on 60 sts. on No. 14 needles and rib 1 plain, 1 purl, for 4in. Change to*No; 10 needles and knit in .pattern for lin, then increase one st. each end of needle every 6th row until there are 103 sts. altogether; k. until sleeve is 19in to underarm, then shape by casting off three sts. at beginning of every row until 30 sts. are left. Cast off. Make other sleeye the Yoke: Join four sts. tog. each side at top of shoulder and with set of No. 14 needles pick up 206 sts. right round and divide on to the three needles, rib for 9in, decreasing for shoulder seam by k. 2 tog. twice every 3rd round for 4in, always keeping decreas;ngs above each other. Cast offlooseiy on right side and turn over 3in for collar. '. „„, up. Join side seams and then sleeve seams and insert into jumper, seam to seam. Press on wrong side, under a damp cloth on a thick ironing blanket or towel, so that the stitch remains raised.
