'FARMERS' REQUESTS
SOUTHLAND BODY

INVERCARGILL, May 31
The annual provincial conference of the' Farmers' Union was held today and will be continued tomorrow. The opening ceremony was performed by the Dominion president, (Mr. W. J. Poison), who also delivered an address. Remits were carried supporting other organisations in their protest against the Government's action in diverting the funds of the Highways .Board to uses other than roading, and demanding that all special taxation levied for roading and maintenance purposes should be used for such purpose only. . . - A substantial reduction in the railage charge on cheese was urged in another remit. ' The monetary system was discussed, on a\. remit urging the union to call upon the Government to concentrate in co-operation with the Governments of the Empire upon finding a monetary system which would enable the peoples of the world to enjoy the vast abundance which technological, improvements, had made available, but the remit was lost by/ 27 to 26. Mr. George Hamilton was elected president. ' , ' • . Arguments for and against levy and restriction respectively on the export of Sew Zealand meat to Britain were advanced as the result of a remit from the Orawia branch advocating ppposition to a levy. An amendment had been' moved, but ,the motion and amendment and further discussion to them was .quashed* by,, the Dominion president (Mr. W. J. Poison), who returned to the meeting while the question'was being debated. After he had appealed to those present .not to embarrass the New. Zealand delegates in London by carrying resolutions, the remit was withdrawn by a vote of the meeting.
