NORTHERN DAIRYING

-♦ : — . INCREASED PRODUCTION Mr. William Grounds in his review of the season at the North Auckland dairy conference this week said the past year had been exceedingly eventful. The season in North Auckland had been remarkable for production, the increase from the northern factories up to the end of April being 5.54 per cent., while the national decrease wa5.5.81 per cent. Of the total production for the Auckland Province last year North Auckland supplied 23 per cent, and this year 25 per cent. Referring to Eastern markets, Mr. Grounds said the exportation of butter from New Zealand to the East for nine months ended April 30 was 353 tons, compared with 378 tons sent from New Zealand the preceding year, chiefly to Malaya and Singapore. Last year Australia exported to the East 5900 tons of butter and of that total 4000 tons went to the Dutch East Indies. For the past nine months New Zealand had exported to Japan 380 boxes of butter. Japan was gradually developing its own dairy industry and was exporting condensed milk to Java. Mr. Grounds reviewed recent legislation as affecting farmers and control of the dairy industry. He said that for the industry involving millions of pounds to be controlled by the Government was an extraordinary assumption of power. He criticised the constitution of the Dairy Produce Board. After dealing with activities of past conferences, Mr. Grounds said: "We have lost the real co-operative spirit, our line of direction and our first line of defence." Mr. Grounds announced that this was his valedictory address as he was not seeking re-election on the executive. A vote of appreciation was accorded him for his valuable services to the industry. .
