TRADE WITH AMERICA
DESIRED IN AUCKLAND V '*'''■. ■ " '..' ■■'' ■ ■ YTrade with the United States was discussed at a meeting of the council of Uhe v.Auckland Chamber of .Commerce this \veek. Approval was expressed of a" letter sent by the executive to the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. R. Masters, inquiring as to the prospects of making a reciprocal trade agreement with the United States. "At least one member of our chamber is of the opinion that the wide disparity in duties chargeable on goods produced in the United States as compared with similar goods from the United Kingdom, as, for instance, motor-cars, may have caused some provocation in the United S'.ates and is possibly preventing your negotiations being furthered," added the letter. "There is no doubt that difficulties will be experienced in concluding satisfactory trade agreements with certain foreign c6untries whose goods entering New Zealand are unduly prejudiced in the matter of Customs tariff. My executive holds the view that alternative export markets are essential, and that the United States offers the best alternative to England for the development of export from New Zealand.",
