A FREAK EGG
An interesting freak egg was shown to a 'Tost" reporter on Thursday by Mr. E. F. Gurither, of Mount Victoria. The egg was shaped like a pear, being of normal appearance at one end, but tapering away to a'rounded point at the other; The weight was about the same as that of a normal specimen, but the shell was slightly thinner at the tapered end than elsewhere; The circumstances under which the egg was laid are rather interesting, and may have had something to' do with its strange .appearance. . '
Some time ago Mr. Gunther acqiiired a Black Orpington hen;. -with eight' chickens, and these were, reared until they were becoming quite sturdy, and the hen had just commenced to lay again when-a> dbg got loose in the fowkj (yard and killed all the chickens. For about a week the hen did not lay ah\l egg, and the first one-that she did lay after the;occurrence was the freak referred to above. It is possible that the shock sustained by the'hen when the dog,broke into the yard may have | been responsible for the unusual-occur- j rence. The hen herself was more! 1 puzzled than anyone else at the hap-j peningyand inspected the egg very i closely, as if unable to comprehend' what had happened. . V ;
