BROUGHTON'S HOLIDAY

A MONTH'S SUSPENSION

STIPENDIARY WINS APPEAL

The Wellington District Committee yesterday considered the appeal of the stipendiary steward, Mr. B. N. Sandilands, vi the case of W. J. Broughton at Pahia3ua on April-10, when the judicial committee of the Pahiatua Club dismissed the 1 knuige against Bruughton of careless riding ip. the Juvenile Handicap. The district committee found Bronghtoh guilty of ■careless riding and decided to suspend his licence for one month from date (May 10).

The appeal is a result of a • notification »y the officiating stipendiary steward (Mr. B. N. Sandilands) that he considered the Pahiatua finding unsatisfactory, as provided by rule 57 of the. Rules of Racing. After the Juvenile Handicap at Pahiatua an inquiry was called by Mr. Sandilands: into interference caused to Medway , . 'wienthe horses had gone about two furM°ngß. ■ Broughton is alleged to have ;adiiiitted before the Pahiatua judicial committee that-the horse he was riding (Finuesko) did check Medway, but he brought: evidence to show that Medway ■ contributed■ to. the trouble. The commit- ,. tee found that Medway, ridden by J bheehan, _ was partly responsible for v tße interference that was caused, and oh this finding it decided to take no action against either jockey. . MEETINGS TO BE MISSED. -~Ti?e result, of the decision is that -.i. .Broughton can now have little chance o^overtaking^the slight lead held Ty L. ■ '!vs.Hhs m the ,race. for the jockeys' premiership. ; The -i-ace meetings which - ,J° rouSntoff'will 'have to miss include the -Nelson, -Wanganui, Te Kuiti, Dannevirke .(second day), either Auckland or Qtaki, ; ,andc;the Foxtpn ,fixtures. HeVwill -, be rjde at the-Hawke's Bay Meeting ,qn;Juhe,l3 andls.v. -; iV-;Su»4e. the.offence for which Brdugliton >-as suspended for a month (just a month" :■««*.r.."the incident occurred)," in. the. .Juvenile Handicap on April 10, Brough- ' ton:has^ridden at five meetings; -being . successful in saluting the judge on 10 .occasions, .. He scored wins at. Pahiatua , 7 on. Pegged Exchange and Sweet Music subsequent to the running of the Juvenile iHandicap, and then be won on Korero •at Westport. At Feilding at Easter he ■ was up on three winners, but this was not exactly a lucky meeting, for he was Becond on four occasions. The luck was against him at Riccarton the second day ■and also at Avondale, a close'second at the, northern fixture being tlfe nearest he could get_,to. a win. At Hawera last .weekend Broughton was seen at his best . m.the.saddle, his good riding alone beimj - responsible for'?the successes of State

Bank an'd'Sweet Musi^; he rode two other winners in;the shade of Mount'Egniont ■•.,-in Soughal and Swpet Music, aiid he was •placed four other times. : ; y ■OnejCpnsolation that'the Awanuni rider tan glean from the deferred'imposition of kia nlonth's ■ suspension is that ■he was able to ride at themeetings mentioned siricei the offence was committed, ' and that month was mueh^busier.for him, and probably more .successful, than' the .next perjodtb Jiine 10., In the mean•t"ne it can ahnost be said that L.-J. Ellis is- going to win the jockeys'- premiership by default; _: : , • ~. ■
