Tawa Flat Concert. ■ > .' ; 'A successful concert was given in the Tawa Flat Hall by the children's concert party. The stage, with good; scenery and lighting, added to the gay; colours of the children's costumes, all helped to make the scene a bright and attractive one.. Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. for the district, who made a short speech during the interval, spoke of the clean work of the children, and commended the training given by Mrs. Threadingham. He also said that he thought the children's idea to give a series of concerts to raise -the necessary funds to equip a play area was a commendable one, as he attributed his good health at the age of 75 to having lived as much as possible in the open air. Mrs. Threadingham was then presented with a very nice bouquef of autumn flowers. The concert, performances, and scenery reflected great credit on the promoters and the children who took part. * Taita Women's Institute. The monthly meeting of the Taita women's Institute was held recently and was presided over by Mrs. S Craven. Mrs. Foster gave a brief and concise report on the recent cohferance at Porirua, and Mrs. Jackson was announced as convener of the' Garden Circle. Suggestions were given for the forming of the programme for the year and a "busy bee circle" was formed," with Mrs. Bonthbrne as convener. Miss Wilson announced,a lecture to be held at Upper,Hutt Theatre. A scene competition was held, the winner being Mrs. Sage,' with Mesdames Searle arid Morris equal second. The judge, Mrs. Boyes, gave a recipe for and an interesting talk on the making of girdle scones, and she was presented with •a' box of fruit. " The Madrigal: Circle provided the musical part of the programme, together with a trio by Mesdames Stedman, Dillon, and RothruV Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, and the afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the.National Anthem and cheers for the King's Jubilee.: ■ '■;■. *.■*.-. '. . Apollo Ladies' Club. '. An enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the Apollo Ladies' Club at their monthly- meeting recently. Several new members were enrolled. After the business of the evening had concluded, a delightful programme, arranged by Mrs. Strong, was presented. Some • charming solos were sung by .Mrs. Clarke, Mr. ,and Mrs. Gardiner,, and Miss' Sutherland also several duets by Miss Sutherland and Mr.:Gardiner, -which were very much appreciated. Mrs. E. Hendry occupied the chair ; Mrs. Hendry stated "that - the . centre in carrying, out its- activities was dependent for its resources upon membership subscriptions, donations, and the promotion of various functions. As would be appreciated, the society had been faced with great difficulty" in maintaining its services in. the community, particularly throughout" the depression period! The object in promoting the' function they had met to consider was to strengthen, the re? sources of the society to enable it to carry on. Myers, members of the V.AJ3., arid the Red Cross nurse to co-operate. In response to a request-the City Council had generously undertaken to make the hall available for the function at a special rate. Notwithstanding the bad weather there was a good attendance.
